Gein falls into the rare category of notorious killers who genuinely just needed to be taken out of society and put in a controlled, but not necessarily punitive, environment. He wasn’t sadistic (hard to believe given his arts and crafts projects), he likely wasn’t a psychopath or sociopath, he was “just” a very warped, ill person.
