If that game was working at some point on an older RPCS3 build, you'll have to track down the specific build where it broke. Sadly, I think it's been broken since forever. As far as I have tested, there is no setting in RPCS3 that will make the game work correctly.
Change spu decoder to ASMJIT. make sure write AND read color buffers are on (read is in advanced tab) Make sure both depth buffers are on, same advanced tab. Honestly don't bother with rpcs3 it doesn't work 99% of the time. I've been using xenia which is far more stable from my experience. But if you want to use rpcs3 the fix for the blacked out characters is enabling Force Bit Emulation (which is under debug) and enabling write color buffers (which is under GPU).
