Mameluke tier has some great skirmishers. Master archers are decent. Palace guards are hard to train but they are versatile. Not the best troop tree but nice and reliable backups. Javelins are very good in Bannerlord and most of your infantry get them. They melt opposition as long as they don't have a shield.
They will automatically switch to spears and deal with them. Keep a couchable lance (or better, a decent swingable polearm) on hand. Once you have instructed a specific amount of units to retreat from the battlefield by pressing F7, you won't be able to bring them back into the battle.
