Hammer definitely falls behind a two handed sword because thralls love to use the useless kick with it. This reduces the DPS a lot since 2h swords have this overhead swing instead of a kick. A good alternative are one handed maces, the, seem to work great in thralls as well. As for leveling, gear and weapons make no difference.
