You could of course ignore and just stick to 5/4/3 split for gloomranger, thief and battlemaster/champion respectively. But Thief for sustained dps and greater mobility is never a bad choice. You're not guaranteed to get a surprise round. But Rogue 3/Ranger 5/Fighter 4 is still a strong build. Just less nova (although if you go assassin and Gloomstalker it's still great Nova, just that you're very dependent on surprise round, more so than the Bard). There are quite a few ways to build them. I would say the most straightforward way is 10 Bard/2 Fighter. This lets you still get Magical Secrets at 10 Bard along with shield proficiency, archery fighting style and action surge from the fighter. I consider this to be a very well rounded build because you still get Level 5 spells as well.I think the dual crossbows are the strongest way to build an archer swords bard in acts 1 and 2, but once you get to Act 3, I like transitioning away from dual cross bows and into the deadshot. 6 attacks at 70% accuracy vs 4 attacks at 90% accuracy is pretty close in damage (dual crossbow is still slightly winning).
