Try leaving the AC on it will turn the engine fan on Low and keep coolant temps down. If the air was lukewarm at all the vents, then it's entirely possible that the heater core away the problem. If, as you said, it was only the drivers side, then replacing the core didn't do a thing and the issue will likely return. The purpose of a thermostat is to let the car get up to operating temperature and then open up to not let it get any hotter. It is the optimal temperature for the car. If you run without a thermostat it would not let the car get up to operating temperature for a long while.
