Thread starter. #1. Well the known secondary battery issues wreaked havoc on my Jeep during a Rally competition. It malfunctioned and siphoned all the power from my large battery, causing my Jeep to literally die without warning numerous times throughout the rally. I am so disappointed, as it impeded my ability to effectively compete.

@Archie PJ - If you have ESS on that 2020 2.0 JLUR, I'm pretty sure you have an auxiliary battery. The aux battery is the power source for everything but the starter when ESS has the engine off at a light. Each battery should be load tested separately. What you've indicated is the aux battery might be discharged, loose connection or croaking.

Staged the ESS battery under the rear pass seat, fits great. Over the coming weeks I'll push it back behind the rear all together but wanted an easy way to monitor it. The Jeep starting system is 12V, therefore the starting system won't work as designed by Jeep off of the 48V eTorque battery. The eTorque battery is for Start/Stop events and applying battery power (adds additional torque, the amount is dependent on if it's a 2.0 or 3.6 engine) for the first half of tire rotation upon accelerating from a stop.

The ESS battery is a problem. I suspect it has left more JLs stranded then any other issue. I highly recommend the TOW package for the higher output alternator and higher capacity battery for ESS equipped JLs.
