I one tricked ryze top, but with the minion aggro update its actually just too hard in some matchups now. I'm having a hard time finding ryze viable at all right now, but he is specifically worse after that aggro update. Like many have said, this is actually more manageable top lane. Yesterday i checked last few 14.X patches and he legitimately has a nightmare win rate in EUW Diamond+/Master+, and it genuinely feels like an automatic loss when he is drafted. As you say, Ryze's passive is in two parts: gaining damage from bonus mana, and gaining bonus mana from AP. The damage gained from mana scalings does not show up in the passive itself. It is shown for each individual basic ability through their mana scalings. You can see this in the wiki.
