Good to Know when it was made.. It's 31 years old now.. If the first letter in the serial # is caliber then L = 38 Special. Taurus 85CH.Some surplus recessed cylinder was ocasionally assembled in small lots up the serial number 84978. From November, 1986, Taurus added a "5" before the serial number for .357 Magnum revolvers. The last serial number without the prefix 5 was 124198. Go to Taurus's site and enter your serial number in their find my model. If it is not too new (2 - 3 months since manufacturing usually) it will tell you model, month and year it was made.
