Stock 4L60E planetary gears are designed to handle up to 400 horsepower and 380 lb-ft of torque. Upgrading these components is an effective way to increase the power handling capability of the transmission. Aftermarket planetary gears are available for the 4L60E, and they are designed to handle up to 700 horsepower and 650 lb-ft of torque. At 8,000 pounds gross vehicle weight, the 4L80E’s capacity is greater than the smaller 4L60E’s. As a result, the 4L80E is a completely different transmission and doesn’t share anything in common with the 4L60E. What’s more, it can handle 440 lb-ft of torque in factory form, and a whole lot more with a Hughes Performance build. You can get them handle power/torque levels above that but they are generally not reliable enough for everytday street use. At 700hp with street tires, you could probably put a stock 4L80E in there with a decent torque converter and a $90 Transgo kit and drive it on a daily basis with very good reliability at your proposed power levels.
