Frankly, snow tires make the biggest difference as long as you have any AWD. I strongly recommend Blizzaks. Subaru (Outback), Lexus (Rx), and Tesla (S/X), in my experience, do very well handling 80 and Truckee areas. But when the snow is heavy on the road, better to not drive if possible.
Lake Tahoe is a touristy lake in a very nature filled area with a small community and some casinos. It's on a mountain that snows. Reno is on the other side of the mountain and also snows some and has a city that is mostly based on casinos and suburbia.

Mind the WIND. Just because it's warmer doesn't mean there's no wind. If gusts exceed 35 MPH, the usual suspects in Tahoe (Palisades and Heavenly) are prone to upper mountain lift closures. This isn't great, because spring snow is significantly better at higher elevations. PLAN the day holistically. Tahoe and SLC both have Denver beat in their access to the mountains. At Tahoe, your neighbors would be a combination of locals and second homeowners/vacation rentals, the latter of which can sometimes make terrible neighbors. From Tahoe, you have to travel farther to access things like sporting events or performing arts centers.
