Personally I set multi-hit on until I got used to the combat, but now I keep it off. Most logical weapons can still mutli-hit even without the feature on, it only really adds cleaving to the small or weird things like knives or spears.
It adds a chance for the swing to multi hit or not based on the following formula: 10 % chance per weapon skill level, averaged with 10% chance per strength level For example, having lvl 6 weapon with lvl 3 str gives 45% chance. 50% penalty applied if a two handed weapon is being used one handed.Most people talk about multi hit without knowing the weapon stats. Even with with multi hit on, there is a limited amount of zombies you can hit at once with said weapon. Many weapons are limited to 2, some bigger one its 3 but rarely more unless modded. 2 isn't that much when you are facing a horde of 50zombies.
Short blunts are abundant and gives you a very strong start to the game if you pick construction worker. However they lack the damage or the range of axes and long blunts. Spears are a gimmick, but they work well with low strength - fitness characters due to one hit kill. Hammer is the best one. The lower damage over the other short blunts doesn't matter for number of "hits to kill", what matters is that it weights 1kg, so it uses less endurance per hit than the ones that weight 1.5kg. Less endurance used equals more zombies killed before you have to rest.

The general consensus of this subreddit tends to be "play how you want to play." That being said, the people against it would just say it is unrealistic and/or it makes the game too easy.
